Homework is an essential aspect of any student’s education and in the PA Department we try to set challenging work that effectively supports classroom study. We are constantly looking at new ways to improve the setting, marking and ways in which we collect homework from our students, which is why we are excited to introduce our online homework page. Here students can receive homework, download resources, view deadlines, receive tips and even send their work electronically to their teacher! Parents also have access to these pages and can keep an eye on all aspects of their child’s educational development!

Performing Arts Department Marking Policy

A means of strengthening and developing our students’ learning and providing us with vital information about their progress.

As a department, it is essential that the marking of work ought to encourage and motivate our students, as well as giving them accurate and clear guidelines of how best to improve.

When a student produces a good piece of work, they should be rewarded and praised for their efforts. On the other hand, a ‘poor’ piece of work needs identifying and the student made aware that the necessary sanctions will be put in place. Either way, our students need to be aware that their books will be marked regularly and we, their teachers, will operate with their best interests at heart. It is up to the individual teacher to keep up-to-date with their marking but all books should be marked at least twice every term.

Ideally marking should:

  • Praise achievement and encourage students but also challenge them and provide specific guidance on how to improve.
  • Include terminal and marginal annotation.
  • Terminal comments are best kept brief and should identify at least one strength and one target in line with learning objectives and/or assessment criteria.
  • Please feel free to correct spelling/punctuation/grammar but don’t identify all errors as this may demotivate the students.
  • Try to encourage students to recognise weaknesses and errors and correct/improve them independently.
  • Peer marking is a good way of allowing students to adhere to marking criteria that will hopefully have a knock on effect on their own work; not to mention cutting back on our own work load!
  • If a student’s work is causing concern, please try to find time to work through with him on a one-to-one basis.
  • At GCSE and ‘A’ Level, drafting is an ideal way for us to help the student realise their potential. This can be quite ‘heavy’ with regards to marking but essential to improve grades.
