On Thursday 31st January four students on the Excellence in Scholarship Programme were invited to Hendon Town Hall for the Full Council Meeting.
Students were able to witness first hand how local government works by sitting in on the meeting of all 63 Barnet councillors. The politicians debated important issues that face Barnet, made official announcements, questioned Council Leaders and Committee Chairmen and debated petitions.
Some topics that were discussed include education, policing, traffic, housing as well as anti-Semitism.
Students on this programme will visit two more Council meetings and participate in a ‘Political Workshop’, where they will simulate a Council meeting and be able to ask questions to local politicians directly.
Students will be awarded with the Certificate of Democratic Engagement from the Council on completion of the programme.
