Parole Board Workshop

Students on the Excellence in Scholarship Programme took part in a workshop on some of the issues faced by the Parole Board.

Ms S Power visited the school to speak to a small group of students about her work on the Parole Board, discussing the duties of the Board, the different issues they might consider when deciding whether to release a prisoner, conditions in prisons and whether life imprisonment should mean imprisonment until death.

Students worked on a case study of a young man imprisoned for murder applying for release. They looked at arguments to support his release - demonstrating remorse, good behaviour etc and the counter arguments - depression, lack of social interactions and recent breaking of prison rules.

They finally decided to delay the prisoner's release date.

We would like to thank Ms Power for volunteering her time to speak to our students.
