On entering the school, students are placed in mixed ability tutor groups which will form the basis of much of the teaching that takes place in Year 7.
Early in the first term students are placed in sets according to ability for Mathematics and Modern Languages. In this way, we are able to tailor lessons appropriately, supporting students who need more time to assimilate new knowledge and extending those who are quick to learn. Science and English classes are taught in mixed ability form groups.
The other subjects taught at Key Stage 3 are Geography, History, Computing, Music, PE, Religious Education, Technology and Citizenship.
A mixture of setting and mixed ability teaching continues throughout Key Stage 3. Where a subject is taught in sets, the composition of the groups is kept under review and students may be moved periodically to ensure they are in a group which matches their ability and stretches them sufficiently.
Throughout Key Stage, students are assessed using our own level descriptors which are shared with students.
